After losing the first-ever penalty shootout at Emirates Stadium, we were eliminated from the Europa League.
After a 1-1 draw on the night and a 3-3 tie overall, Gabriel Martinelli’s penalty kick was saved in the shootout, giving Nuno Santos the opportunity to score the game-winning goal.
There was no indication of the drama that would unfold over a lengthy evening at the Emirates when Granit Xhaka put us ahead inside the first 20 minutes.
But, we failed to capitalize on the advantage, and Pedro Goncalves’ incredible equalizer from close to the halfway line was the result.
When Sporting had a man sent off late on, we came close to the win several times in extra time, most notably when Gabriel and Leandro Trossard hit the post.
Although Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, and Leandro Trossard all scored on penalty kicks, Martinelli’s attempt was stopped by Antonio Adan, and the Portuguese team moved on.
