‘Closing in’: Fabrizio Romano says Man City player is very close to leaving for £9m now

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Shea Charles is closing in on a permanent transfer move to Southampton from Manchester City.

Back in May, it was reported that Everton had an interest in signing the 19-year-old this summer, as did Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig.

Now though, the youngster looks set to make a move away from the Manchester club, but to a different side.

Southampton closing in on Charles deal

In a recent Twitter post, Romano said this on the matter.

He said: “Excl: Southampton are closing in on deal to sign Man City 2003 born midfielder Shea Charles #SaintsFC.

“Manchester City will receive £9m fee — it will also include buy back clause and sell on clause for #MCFC. Charles will travel this weekend for medical if all goes to plan.”

It has since been reported by the Daily Mail that the fee Southampton will be paying for the midfielder is £11m rather than the £9m that Romano claimed.

During his time at City, the 19-year-old has made 99 appearances for the club, with one of them being his senior debut in Pep Guardiola’s side, which came on the final day of the previous Premier League season in the 1-0 defeat against Brentford.

Despite his lack of regular first-team minutes, the fact that Southampton are willing to pay potentially up to £11m to sign the midfielder shows how highly thought of he is.

Also, with Romano claiming that City will have a buy-back clause in the contract with Southampton for Charles, this shows how highly the Citizens rate him and believe he could one day become capable enough of potentially being a regular player for them at some point down the road.

Moving forward, with a move to St. Mary’s now looking likely, it’ll be interesting to see how the youngster fares if given the chance to play regularly in the Championship for a side that will undoubtedly be aiming to regain their place in the Premier League.
