‘Two-year contract’ – £14m Man Utd signing set to join La Liga club after becoming a free agent.

Former Manchester United defender Daley Blind is set to join La Liga side Girona after being released by Bayern Munich, according to reports in Germany.

Blind arrived at Old Trafford for a fee of £14million in 2014 under Louis van Gaal before leaving Old Trafford in 2018 for Ajax in a deal worth a minimum of €16million, during Jose Mourinho’s time at the club.

He spent four-and-a-half years in Amsterdam before mutually terminating his contract in December, becoming a free agent. He quickly found a new home at the beginning of January as he signed for Bayern.

However, a managerial change at the club – which saw Thomas Tuchel replace Julian Nagelsmann at the end of March – meant Blind was released at the end of the season but the 33-year-old is set to undergo a medical at Girona ahead of signing a two-year deal.

That is according to German outlet Sport Bild, with Blind playing just five times for Bayern before his departure. During his four-year spell at Old Trafford, he won the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Europa League. They were the only pieces of silverware claimed by the club since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure until Erik ten Hag guided the Red Devils to the League Cup last season.

Blind made 141 United appearances in total, scoring six goals and providing 10 assists. Speaking to the club’s media last summer, Blind said he reflected fondly on his time in Manchester.

He said: “I only have good memories here. Winning titles, winning trophies with this club was an amazing feeling and I was playing in those finals and being part of that team, so they are moments in my career that I will never forget.

“But all the experience of being a player at Manchester United was an amazing journey. It sounds a bit cheap to say, but it was a dream come true to play for a club like this. It’s good memories here and I really enjoyed my four years at the club.”
