Mesut Ozil defended Cristiano Ronaldo and attacked his critics.
Cristiano Ronaldo has been scrutinized in recent weeks. Ronaldo caused a stir by insulting Manchester United in an interview before the World Cup. Later, his actions or their interpretation got him into trouble. Mesut Ozil defended his former Real Madrid teammate as fans, former teammates, and pundits criticized him.
Ozil said former players who criticize Ronaldo are using his ‘big name’ to get attention. Ozil said people should be thankful for 20 overs of Ronaldo in his prime.

Ozil tweeted: “Why is the press so negative about Cristiano? The media wants clicks, and careerless pundits want to get attention with his big name and make him look bad.
“What’s surprising about him not scoring 50 goals a season at 38? Every football fan should be glad he played for 20 years.
“No one from his generation will match his numbers. He’s unique. Everyone should respect one of sports’ greats.”
Ronaldo was benched by Portugal coach Fernando Santos in the Round of 16 game against Switzerland. Later, the Portugal FA said the rumor was false.
The Portugal captain tweeted about ‘outside forces’ trying to break his team during the World Cup.
