Glen Johnson says Graham Potter doesn’t need to spend a lot of money in January to improve Chelsea’s squad. Potter replaced Thomas Tuchel as Chelsea manager earlier this month and took charge of his first match last Wednesday.

Wesley Fofana, Raheem Sterling, and Marc Cucurella all joined for hefty transfer fees this summer. Johnson believes Potter can avoid a similarly expensive outlay in January by removing unfocused players from the Chelsea squad.

Johnson told Express Sport he was shocked to see Tuchel sacked after a good job at Chelsea.

“He had many new players, so I was surprised. I was surprised they chose Graham Potter.

“I’m a fan of Potter, but it’s one thing to get players to play at Brighton and another to compete with the best players in the best competitions. If he can make Chelsea play like Brighton, they’ll improve.

“They have a good squad, honestly. I think he’ll focus on getting used to the players and settling in.

I don’t think he needs to sign certain players, but he should find out who doesn’t want to be there and who does.

Johnson spoke to Express Sport while attending a Liverpool and SC Johnson event at Anfield to improve local children’s recycling and sustainability knowledge.

“We’re teaching 200 kids about renewable energy, recycling, and saving the planet,” he said. “They can take home what they’ve learned today to educate their parents and help everyone have a better future.”
