The Dutchman’s first transfer window as manager of Manchester United was full of ups and downs, but the team is almost ready to bring in a fifth player before the deadline.
Manchester United is close to signing Brazilian international and Ajax star Antony in a deal worth a lot of money, but the winger won’t be their last new player of the summer.
Manager Erik ten Hag could instead bring in up to four new players before the transfer window closes on September 1. Antony’s move to Old Trafford has taken too long. Several bids were turned down before a deal worth reportedly £84.4 million was reached.
There is still work to be done to fill out the rest of the team, and United’s football director John Murtough is working hard with Ten Hag to make sure that the Red Devils fans get a few surprises before the window closes.
Even though United has already signed five players, all of whom cost more than £200 million, the Telegraph says that they could still sign up to four more. The report says that Martin Dubravka, the goalkeeper for Newcastle United, is the first top player the big Premier League clubs want to sign.
Ten Hag wants someone who can fill in for David de Gea, his first-choice goalkeeper, and thinks Dubravka is a good choice. The former number one goalkeeper for Newcastle is excited about the move. He will fill in for Dean Henderson, who is on loan with Nottingham Forest.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka has already lost the new manager’s favor, so a new right back is also on the list of things to get. Sergino Dest of Barcelona and Vanderson of Monaco have been named as possible replacements. Both would cost less than the £50 million paid for Wan-Bisska in 2019.
United has added both Christian Eriksen and Casemiro this summer, but they are still open to the idea of adding a third central midfielder. It’s no secret that they want Frenkie de Jong, but despite their hard work, it seems almost certain that the Dutch player will stay at Barcelona.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s well-known desire to leave was what made the club look for another forward in the beginning. Now, it looks like the 37-year-old will stay put, but the top people at Old Trafford haven’t stopped looking for a new striker.
At this point, Memphis Depay seems like the most likely target as Barcelona tries to get as much money as possible for the 28-year-old. Depay has already tried and failed to become a fan favorite at Old Trafford. However, he reportedly hasn’t let that stop him, and he would be in favor of a Ronaldo-style return.
If United can pull off all four of these deals, they could go from being seen as a long shot to make the Champions League to a team that could challenge for the title.
