Fabrizio Romano says that Chelsea and Serie A team Spezia have agreed on a loan deal for versatile defender Ethan Ampadu.
Even though Ampadu has played center back in several preseason games, he has not yet played in a real game under Thomas Tuchel.
Tuchel seemed to be impressed by the 21-year-play old’s in the middle of the back three during the first team’s tour of the United States, but that wasn’t enough to convince the manager.
Since then, the Blues have signed Kalidou Koulibaly and are said to be close to getting Wesley Fofana from Leicester City.
Trevoh Chalobah won’t be able to leave Chelsea this summer, according to Romano. On the other hand, Ampadu is close to leaving the club.
The Italian transfer expert wrote on Twitter that Ampadu is about to join Spezia from Chelsea.
“I’ve been told that the deal is almost ready to be signed.
“Ampadu has agreed to terms on a personal level, and both clubs have reached a full deal.”
Romano also said that Ampadu is likely to join Spezia on a season-long loan with an option to buy for around €15 million (£12.7 million). The medical is set for early next week.
There is no room at Chelsea for the versatile Ampadu
The star player from Exeter is under contract with Chelsea until 2024. Since the player’s contract ends next summer, it might be risky for Chelsea to agree to an option to buy instead of an obligation.
Many people would also say that the Wales international could have been a very good squad player at Chelsea because of how versatile he was, but Tuchel already has Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who can do both of those jobs, on his team.
Loftus-Cheek isn’t likely to play center back this season, even though he did it once last season. However, Chalobah staying, Cucurella being able to play in the back three, and Fofana possibly joining would give Tuchel a lot of options.
