Martin Odegaard talked about his own form and his relationship with Gabriel Jesus. He also talked about Fulham’s biggest threat before Arsenal plays them today.
Martin Odegaard, the captain of Arsenal, has made a promise to Gabriel Jesus before the Gunners play Fulham.
Odegaard took over as club captain this season after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette left the team. The Norwegian playmaker has had a good start to the season and is getting along well with summer signing Jesus in the attack.
Arsenal is in for a tough test tonight in the London derby against Fulham. Fulham is back in the Premier League with a goal, and Marco Silva’s team hasn’t lost in their first three games, including a good draw against Liverpool on the first weekend. Odegaard is aware of the threat posed by the Cottagers, especially by their star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, and he wants the Gunners to keep up their good form, which has put them at the top of the table.
Odegaard talked about his relationship with Jesus, his own form, Bernd Leno’s return to the Emirates Stadium, and Mitrovic’s threat on the club’s official website. The 23-year-old said, “I was a little upset with myself after the Palace game because I should have done better in front of goal. I’ve said before that’s an area I want to improve, so it was good to get a couple of goals against Bournemouth.”
“I’ve been waiting for a while to score my first goal, so scoring two so early on was great for me. It also helped the team win again, so I was very happy. I talked about how I’m getting closer to Gabriel Jesus on the team, and I think you could see that in the second half [vs. Bournemouth].
“It’s too bad that his goal wasn’t counted because he was offside. When I watched it again, I still don’t think he was offside. He would have done well to score that goal. After the second goal, when I took the shot in front of him, I felt like I owed him the assist, so I hope I can give him one back today.”
Arsenal is the only team in the Premier League to have a perfect record so far, and they are hoping to keep up their great play against Fulham. Odegaard added, “It’s nice to be on top of the table, especially since some of the big clubs have already lost points.”
“Once again, this shows how tough this league is, since any team can cause trouble for any other team. The team we’re playing today, Fulham, has already shown that by drawing with Liverpool and not losing in the league yet this season.
Last weekend, Marco Silva’s team got their first win of the season against Brentford. Tonight, they hope to pull off an upset against Arsenal like they did against Liverpool on the first weekend. Odegaard knows that Mitrovic and the others are a threat, but he says he is excited to see Leno back at the Emirates Stadium after the German goalkeeper moved to Fulham for good this summer.
“Fulham has good players all over the field. They are a very strong team with a lot of strong individuals. Aleksandar Mitrovic is always dangerous in the box, and they gave Liverpool a lot of trouble,” the Norway player said.
“They have a lot of confidence as a team, too. They got off to a good start, and they won almost every game last season, so they are used to that. To beat them, we have to be very smart.
“When you talk about how good the Premier League is, you can point to the fact that Bernd Leno is now playing goal for Fulham. That’s a great move for them. We know how good he is, and it will be great to have him back at the Emirates today. We hope the best for him there, but not today!”
